Q. How do I locate DVDs and Blu-rays on the shelves at Newman Library?

After you find a DVD or Blu-ray in Discovery Search, note the item's location and item number so you can locate it in Newman Library. Records will show information such as:

• Newman DVDs ; DVD 8656
• Newman DVDs ; Blu-ray 22

DVDs and Blu-rays are shelved alphabetically by the first significant word in the title (ignoring initial articles such as A, An, and The) and then numerically by the DVD or Blu-ray number.

If a title begins with a number, the number is treated as though it were spelled out for filing purposes. For example, 500 Nation is filed under F for Five hundred. 

Examples:

• CODA → filed under C → DVD 8656
• Mamma mia! : the movie → filed under M → DVD 7928
• Shakespeare in love → filed under S → DVD 8
• Shakespeare in love → filed under S → Blu-ray 22
• A Beautiful Mind → filed under B, not A → DVD 416
• The Godfather → filed under G, not T → DVD 8606

Titles beginning with numbers:

(listed in filing order)

• 500 Nation → filed under F for Five hundred → DVD 965
• 47 Below → filed under F for Forty-seven → DVD 7873
• The 100 Year Old Man Who Climbed Out of the Window and Disappeared → filed under O for One Hundred → DVD 6681
• 13 Hours → filed under T for Thirteen → DVD 7193
• Thirteen Days → filed under T → DVD 7461
• 20th Century Women → filed under T for Twentieth → DVD 7545
• The 10th Kingdom → filed under T for Tenth → DVD 8678

Use the title filing letter to go to the correct section, then use the DVD or Blu-ray number to locate the exact item on the shelf. 

The DVD collection is located in the Learning Commons on the 2nd floor of Newman Library, next to the main restrooms. The Blu-ray collection is shelved at or near the end of the main DVD collection.

If the location says Newman Reserve, go to the User Services Desk on the second floor and staff will retrieve the item and check it out to you.
