Q. How do I renew a book?

My Library Account

To renew books checked out from any Virginia Tech library, login to My Library Account. 

You can access My Library Account via the library's home page under the Quicklinks section, or from the Discovery Search page. Select Sign in or My Account from the Menu option (top right), then log into your library account.

Note there are two logins: 

1) Virginia Tech Account (for students and employees) 

2) Local Login (Virginia Tech Library cardholders not directly affiliated with the university (e.g. alumni, local community members)

Under My Loans, you can view items currently checked out, due dates, renew items, see pending holds, and any fines you may have accumulated. See: How to access My Library Account / Discovery Search - Login to view "My Loans" and renew items (pdf file).

For assistance with library services such as placing holds, renewing books, recalling items, reviewing checkouts, or addressing library fines, please contact the library during our operating hours.

Interlibrary Loan (ILL)

Books checked out from other libraries via Interlibrary Loan may be renewed through ILLiad (see Figure 1 below), if renewals are allowed by the lending library.

Once your book is renewed, you can keep it for an additional lending period, starting on the day you renewed. You can keep renewing items until you reach your limit of renewals or when someone recalls the book.

Why materials may not renew?

There are several reasons why a book may not renew. They include:

• You have reached your maximum number of renewals for that book. If you still need the book, you may bring it into the library, check it in, and provided there are no requests for the item, check it back out again.
• Another patron has requested the book.
• Your account is blocked due to fines or overdue materials. To resolve the block, you will need to pay fines or return overdue materials.
• The item selected for renewal is a Course Reserve textbook, Storage Journal, Video, DVD, or Optical Disc, which are not renewable.
