No. You do not need to be signed in to any VT login services in order to search in Discovery Search. However, signing in allows you to view your library account, save items for later, and access additional features such as:
- Renewing books and videos
- Requesting Interlibrary Loan (ILL)
- For Extended Campus Users: selecting Extended Campus Users Request from Interlibrary Loan for delivery to your designated library branch or home address
- Creating favorites lists
- Exporting citations to Endnote
- Making purchase suggestions
- Viewing loan periods, including for Course Reserves
Current VT faculty, staff, and students will have the option to place Interlibrary Loan (ILL) requests if an item is not available. To access the full text of an article or ebook, click on the link. If authentication is required, you will be prompted to sign in with 2-factor authentication after attempting to access the full text.
When you're looking at the page of results, you may notice a link at the top right corner of the page that says "Sign in":
You can choose to sign in using your VT 2-factor authentication or borrower's credentials (for those not affiliated with the university):
When you sign in with a VT account, you'll be asked which information you'd like to share; select Accept.
