We only have the Confederate service records for the state of Virginia. To find those, first look in the microfilm indexes on the third floor in call number E581.4 C65 Index. These are in the drawers at the end of the service records for Virginia, which are in E581.4 C65 (look in the indexes prior to looking in the service records). Call number E581.4 C65 Index Microfilm Index to compiled service records of Confederate soldiers

Step one: Once you find your soldier (or sailor), the index will give you the unit that he served with. For example, for David McColgan, the index shows Co. H, 28 Virginia Infantry.

Step two:Look up the unit in this book:
TITLE: Compiled service records of Confederate soldiers who served in organizations from the State of Virginia : [guide].
PUBLISHER Washington : National Archives and Records CALL NO E581.4 C65 Guide

The guide will show the microfilm roll number followed by the military unit, then the alphabetical list of the soldiers by surname. For example, for David McColgan, find Twenty-eighth Infantry, 744 Mc-Mi.

Step three: Go to the actual service records which are arranged by unit and then by surname. For, David McColgan, pull out reel 744.
